Doctors are our healers, yet they have the highest rate of suicide among any profession. Medical students and families of physicians touched by suicide come out of the shadows to expose this silent epidemic and the truth about a sick healthcare system that not only drives our brilliant young doctors to take their own lives but puts patients lives at risk too.

Thanks for joining for the film viewing and discussion. We had over 20 physicians on the Zoom call on March 15th, 2022.

New RTVS Pathway Now Available for Rural Health Providers

Post-COVID Recovery Clinic Referral Pathway

Please find attached a poster which outlines the Real-Time Virtual Support (RTVS) network which helps rural providers
deliver timely, patient-centred care closer to home.

RTVS has Instant Access, Quick Reply and Patient-Facing Pathways. Benefits of the RTVS Pathways:
  • Improved accessibility of care for rural communities to meet individual health needs
  • Reduction of out-of-pocket costs for patients seeking care
  • Fosters patient-centred care by bridging specialties and transfers in a timely manner
  • Relationship-building among physicians and care team that fosters community of practice
  • Increased confidence and reduced isolation of physicians and nurses in rural and remote areas
  • Increased mentoring and education opportunities for providers, especially new-to-practice residents

Providers based in rural areas have 24/7 access to Peer-to-Peer Pathways for Emergency, Critical Care, Pediatrics and Maternity & Newborn. In addition, there are several Quick Reply services in Dermatology, Hematology, Rheumatology, Thrombosis, and myofascial pain. A quick-reply Post COVID-19 Recovery Clinic Referral pathway has also been added.
RTVS can also be used to connect patients to providers. The
First Nations Health Authority’s First Nations Doctor of the Day and First Nations Virtual Substance Use and Psychiatric Service pathways and the 8-1-1 HealthLink BC Emergency iDoctor in-assistance (HEiDi) are the patient-facing pathways operating through RTVS.

The poster provides details on how to connect, through Zoom, or a telephone line, to the Peer-to-Peer Pathways.  Please feel free to distribute and/or post for your community providers.

Anyone looking for further information on how to set up the Zoom contacts can visit https://rccbc.ca/rtvs/.

New Visitor Policy: A patient centered approach that recognizes:

1. Family members are essential partners in care and play an important role in well-being, comfort, quality of life, healing and/or recovery.
2. While we need to limit visits as an important precaution to ensure the safety of all, the risks of loneliness and isolation must be considered, as well as the potential impacts on Indigenous people and their families who may have past experiences of racism and discrimination in health care environments.
3. We must balance the need for safety with the need for connection between individuals and their families; our goal is to implement a fair and consistent approach to essential visit decision making across all care settings.

Special thanks to the CDMS, Beaver House Fudge and The Fishbowl Café!

For anyone who has ever worked within Cowichan you will know that the effective relationships between Physicians and Staff of collegiality and collaboration is palpable. This was highlighted again on the 14TH Sept when, even on a rainy day, the kindness and care that the team has for each other shone through! The staff at Cowichan District Hospital received a special gift of appreciation. The Cowichan District Medical Society (CDMS) along with Beaver House Fudge who is a local business in the Cowichan Valley and The Fishbowl Café, another local business brought sweet joy to the site.

Staff were able to choose from a few different flavours of fudge and also received a card for a free 16oz beverage at The Fishbowl Café. The CDMS wanted to let staff know they were grateful for their service and their ability to work effectively together in order to serve the Community.

You can’t get sweeter than fudge and a coffee or hot chocolate and the staff very much appreciated the generosity of the society and the extension of care from both the community businesses and the society.
